Phones get lost, stolen, dropped in water or simply stop working. When that happens, the phone itself can be replaced, but your family photos, contacts and years of WhatsApp chats cannot, unless you have a backup. Setting up automatic backups takes about 10 minutes and protects you for years.

1. Back Up Your Photos and Videos

Android

  1. Install or open Google Photos.
  2. Tap your profile picture → Turn on backup.
  3. Choose the quality. “Storage saver” uses less space in your Google account.
  4. Choose to back up only on Wi-Fi if you have limited mobile data.

iPhone

  1. Go to Settings → your name → iCloud → Photos.
  2. Turn on Sync this iPhone (iCloud Photos).
  3. You can also use Google Photos on iPhone if you prefer.

Note: free cloud storage is limited (Google gives 15 GB shared across Gmail, Drive and Photos; iCloud gives 5 GB). If you have many photos, a small paid plan is worth it.

2. Back Up Your Contacts

  • Android: Settings → Google → Settings for Google apps → Google Contacts sync → turn it on. Make sure new contacts are saved to your Google account, not “Phone” or “SIM”.
  • iPhone: Settings → your name → iCloud → turn on Contacts.

3. Back Up WhatsApp Chats

Android (Google Drive)

  1. Open WhatsApp → Settings → Chats → Chat backup.
  2. Select your Google account.
  3. Set “Back up to Google” to Daily.
  4. Choose whether to include videos (they take a lot of space).
  5. Tap Back up to make the first backup now.

iPhone (iCloud)

  1. Make sure iCloud Drive is turned on in iPhone settings.
  2. Open WhatsApp → Settings → Chats → Chat backup.
  3. Turn on Auto backup and choose Daily.
  4. Tap Back Up Now.

Tip: turn on end-to-end encrypted backup in the same menu for extra privacy. Save the password or key somewhere safe, because without it you cannot restore your chats.

4. Back Up Everything Else

  • Android: Settings → Google → Backup → turn on Backup by Google One. This saves app data, call history, SMS and settings.
  • iPhone: Settings → your name → iCloud → iCloud Backup → turn on. The iPhone backs up automatically when charging and connected to Wi-Fi.

5. Keep a Second Copy (The 3-2-1 Rule)

For very important photos and documents, keep 3 copies, on 2 different types of storage (for example, cloud and a laptop or USB drive), with 1 copy away from home (the cloud counts). Once every few months, copy your photos to a computer or external drive.

How to Check Your Backup Is Working

  • Open photos.google.com or icloud.com on a computer and check your latest pictures are there.
  • In WhatsApp’s Chat backup screen, check the “Last backup” date.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I move WhatsApp chats from Android to iPhone?

Yes. WhatsApp supports transferring chats between Android and iPhone during setup of the new phone, usually using Apple’s “Move to iOS” app or a cable.

Does backup use my mobile data?

It can. Set backups to run only on Wi-Fi to avoid using your mobile data.

How often should I back up?

Daily automatic backup is best. Set it once and it runs by itself.
