Just landed in Doha and not sure how to get to your hotel or home? Hamad International Airport is only about 15 km from central Doha, and you have several good options. Here is a simple comparison of each one, with approximate fares.
Quick Comparison
| Option | Approx. cost to central Doha | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Doha Metro (Red Line) | About QAR 2 (Standard class) | Cheapest, light luggage |
| Karwa bus | About QAR 2.50–3 | Budget travel to bus-served areas |
| Karwa taxi | About QAR 40–60 | Families, heavy luggage, late nights |
| Uber / Careem | Varies with demand | Door-to-door convenience |
1. Doha Metro: The Cheapest Option
The Red Line of the Doha Metro stops right at the airport. Follow the metro signs after leaving the arrivals hall.
- A Standard journey costs about QAR 2. There is also a more comfortable Gold Class for a higher fare.
- Buy a Travel Card from the ticket machines or counters at the station. Keep some balance on it for your return trip.
- The Red Line connects the airport to Msheireb (the main interchange), West Bay, Katara and Lusail.
- The metro runs from early morning until around midnight, and starts later on Fridays. Check the Qatar Rail website for the current timetable.
Tip: eating and drinking are not allowed on the metro, and fines apply.
2. Karwa Taxi: Easiest Door-to-Door
The official Karwa taxis wait at the taxi rank just outside the arrivals hall. They are metered and available 24 hours.
- At the airport, the meter starts at about QAR 25 (including the first 1.8 km).
- After that, the fare is about QAR 1.6 per km during the day and a little more at night.
- A trip to central Doha usually costs around QAR 40–60, depending on traffic and your exact destination.
Always make sure the meter is running when you start the trip.
3. Karwa Buses
Mowasalat (Karwa) runs public buses from the airport bus area near arrivals to several parts of Doha. Fares are low, around QAR 2.50–3 on common routes. Buses use a different payment card from the metro, so check the Karwa Journey Planner app for routes and payment options.
4. Uber and Careem
Ride-hailing apps such as Uber and Careem work in Qatar and are popular with residents. Prices increase during busy times, holidays and late at night, so compare with a Karwa taxi.
5. Limousines and Car Rental
For a more premium ride, limousine services are available at the airport at fixed higher rates. Car rental companies also have counters in the arrivals hall. Visitors should check whether their home country driving licence or an international permit is accepted.
Which Option Should You Choose?
- Travelling alone with a small bag: take the metro.
- Family with lots of luggage: take a Karwa taxi.
- Arriving after midnight: taxi or Uber, because the metro may be closed.
- Going far outside Doha: taxi, ride-hailing or ask a friend to pick you up.
